Therefore, this study was designed to assess the role of 3D quantitative analysis of the TB on baseline MRI in predicting overall survival (OS) in patients with NELM prior to IATs, in order to establish a novel staging and predictive biomarker. However, the exact and standardized predictive value of 3D approach for neuroendocrine tumors (NET) has yet to be assessed. Previous studies using the 3D quantitative qEASL technique demonstrated high precision in the calculation of TB in hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC).
Three-dimensional (3D) enhancement-based methodologies that quantify the enhancing and viable TB have been previously investigated and helped overcome these limitations. However, the one- and two-dimensional (1D and 2D) approaches are limited by imprecision and subjectivity and theoretically do not fully reflect the dimension and viability of the tumor. The most common technique is by measuring the sum of the tumors’ diameters or areas. Prior to any therapeutic decision, estimating liver tumor burden (TB) is the key component of selecting a suitable treatment.
Intraarterial tumor therapies (IATs) such as bland embolization (BE), transarterial chemoembolization (TACE) or radioembolization can be offered to selected patients with neuroendocrine tumor liver metastases (NELM) with liver predominant disease after systemic therapy.
